About us - Van Steijn lijsten

Welcome to the vanSteijn•lijsten website.
This is what I offer, artisan or otherwise:

Custom framing
I frame almost everything: paintings, art on paper, photographs, antique prints, embroidery,
certificates, posters, sports shirts and even 3-D objects. You can choose from a wide
selection of frame mouldings in different styles and with various finishes. You will also find a
generous range of acid-free mountboards in various colours, finishes and thicknesses. If your
object needs glass for protection I can offer you different types, from clear float glass to
museum glass with anti-glare and UV-protection properties and, for very large items, acrylic
glass.
Just bring the item you want framed to my shop and together we will explore different
options using framing-material samples. When we have decided on how to frame your item,
I will give you a no-obligation quotation.

Repair and restoration of frames
If your frame is damaged or glass broken, you can bring it in for repair. Or maybe you would
like the frame resized, the mountboard changed or check whether the framing of your
valuable print meets proper conservation standards.
I also restore ornamental frames, for instance when ornaments have broken off and are
missing or the corners (mitres) have come loose. If the gilding is tarnished or has worn off, I
can do a complete overhaul of the frame: applying new ground layers and the appropriate
finishing.

Cleaning and restoration of paintings
If your valuable oil painting has turned yellowish or brownish over time, it can usually be
cleaned by removing the film of dirt (tar, fat, nicotine, insect droppings, etc.) and/or
reducing the old layer(-s) of varnish. Dents and tears can be repaired, and if the paint layer
and linen are in an exceptionally poor condition, the painting relined.
If the painting on linen has lost its tension it may help to have the painting re-stretched,
either on the existing stretcher (if in proper condition) or on a new one. Checking and
adapting the tension of a painting on linen should be done regularly in order to prevent the
layer of paint cracking.

Conservation and restoration of work on paper
Antique and contemporary prints (engravings, etchings, lithographs, etc.) may, over time,
start to show stains or an overall discolouring. Often this is due to a process of acidification
caused by framing materials such as backboards or mountboards that contain acids. If
proper and stable inks were used when producing the print, this process can be reversed.
Stains and discolouration can by removed or reduced by letting the print pass through
several baths with cleaning, stabilizing and neutralizing properties. Watercolours too can be
de-acidified and the stains retouched (or camouflaged).

Sale of contemporary art and antique prints
I represent a small group of artists whose works of art I sell, both on paper as well as on
canvas. Do have a look at the pages (in Dutch) on this site for examples. I also sell antique
prints, mainly of Scheveningen, The Hague and The Netherlands (maps).
